By Ryan Humphries Co-Founder: Axistence Athletics Gordon Ramsey might be able to eyeball the ingredients he uses for his dishes…but the rest of us aspiring chefs should probably follow a recipe. To reach Gordon Ramsey levels of eyeballing, it takes practice. When I first start working with nutrition clients, they often want to just eyeball their meals to track them. While that will deliver A result, its probably not be THE result they're looking for. Imagine trying to cook a meal you’ve never made before, and doing so without a recipe. It’s entirely possible that you could make something amazing…but chances are, you’ll f*ck it up. We might as well use the recipe until we get the hang of it. The recipe is our strategy. It shows us what worked, and more importantly, what didn’t. The same thing can be said for our training. If we want to get stronger, fun fact, there’s a recipe for that too :) Want a simple recipe? Step on the scale. Write down the number you see. Also write down the date and time. Diligently log how many calories you’re consuming every day for the next 2 weeks. Step on the scale 2 weeks later. One of three things will have happened: 1. The scale is up: This means that you ate more calories than you burned, and you gained weight. 2. The scale is down: This means that you ate less calories than you burned, and you lost weight. 3. The scale is the same: Your calories burned were equal to your calories consumed. Depending on your goals, and based on what you learned, you can adjust what you’re eating for the next two weeks. Just like the top chefs, as you get better at following the recipe, you won’t have to track it as closely. You’ll learn what’s in that Starbucks egg bite or that lunch at Chipotle, or what an actual tablespoon of peanut butter looks like (hint, it’s less than you think). Gordon Ramsay didn’t become the best overnight, and neither will you. Trust the process, follow the recipe.
